Movement - Why Do People Move?

Why do people move? Why do they stay where they are? Today you will take a look at the many complicated reasons people decide where they are living is no longer working for them. Sometimes it can be a small move to a new neighbourhood, other times it can be across the world.  Both types of moves presents its challenges.  We will take a closer look at those challenges today.

How would your life be different if you lived across the globe?

What does your average day look like? What do you have for breakfast? How do you get to school? What do you do after school? Do you think your live is similar to those around you? What about those across the globe, in either Australia, Asia or Africa?

Our upcoming unit in Social Studies/ELA will focus on our lives and lives of people across the globe. What do we share in common? What makes us different?

We will be creating an Infographic along with a diary entry from our own personal perspective and an imaginary perspective, if we were to live in a completely different location across the globe.

You will be responsible for choosing your location and making connections between your life here and how your live would be similar and/or different if you lived somewhere else.

We'll put our infographics and diary entries together to make a classroom book we can share with other students, teachers and parents.

We are doing this so we can gain a better understand of our personal word and the world around us, and to build our critical thinking skills.

Today we'll start by watching a video that shows a quick comparison to the lives of two different people - a boy living in Guatemala (not in Asia, Africa or Australia mind you, but it gets the point across) and a girl living in the United States.

How are these two lives different? How are they the same? In your Writer's Notebook, we will create a chart and record our thinking.

Natural Wonders of the World - Which One Would You Most Like to Visit?

As we continue our unit on People and Places in the World, we will take a closer look at the 7 Natural Wonders of the World.  Today you will have a chance to take a closer look at these natural wonders and learn more about a specific one of your choice.  You might decide to learn more about Machu Picchu. This video is a good example of something you might use to do your research.

After watching the video, you can then decide if you want to learn more about Machu Picchu or if you want to learn about another natural wonder.  To help you research, you can being with this wonderful website from National Geographic, 7 Natural Wonders of the World.  You can record your information using the graphic organizer I will provide you. (Here is a link to it if you need another copy).

Using this research, you will create a postcard/letter from the perspective of you visiting the Natural Wonder of your choice.  It will include both a picture/photo and writing. You will share your postcards with classmates.

We will work together to set guidelines of what the postcard should include. In the meantime, here is some inspiration!

Wonders of the World - Pinned Photos/Articles

Reflection Time!

Today you will be doing a self-assessment on your letter to me “from” the 7 Wonders of the World you “visited”. Take a look at your letter and check to see you have included the necessary information by highlighting it on your letter and then record it in the box.  If you don’t have the information in the letter, leave it blank.  Once you are done, decide on how you’d evaluate yourself on your this assignment. Did you include the following information?

Name of the natural wonder?
Location (latitude and longitude)?

Country and continent?
Vegetation?

Climatic zone and/or weather?

Nearest ocean or body of water?

Is your photograph on the bulletin board?

Did your letter show your learning? Did you do enough research to include all of the necessary criteria? Based on the information above, decide on where you fit on the 4 point scale.
Very good to excellent understanding and application of concepts and skills
Good understanding and application of concepts and skills
Basic understanding and application of concepts and skills
Limited understanding and application of concepts and skills
Did you include all of the information and add many interesting details and vocabulary?
Missed one or two sections but you have almost everything plus quite a few extra details and interesting vocabulary?
Missing a few sections but have most of the needed information and some extra details and a few interesting words?
Missing more than half of the information, no extra details, and not much detail?

Next we will find all 7 Natural Wonders with an atlas using the longitude and latitude measurements you and your classmates recorded. You will be demonstrating this understanding to your parents at the Student-Led conferences.  Record the coordinates for each natural wonder below, then with at atlas, find them on the map on page 10.

What Does It Mean to Show Courage?

All of us have different struggles, challenges and obstacles that we overcome every day. Rather than compare ourselves to each other and challenges, we can use the strength and knowledge of others to help us in our lives. What are ways we can use the words and experiences of others to help us in overcoming our own challenges?

Where on Google Earth is Carmen Sandiego?

How to get there: Search Carmen Sandiego Google Earth Click on the link Open a new game Read the clues, take your time and follow along You can use a World Atlas if needed for some clues (flag colours, etc) Play a few rounds and once done, decide on a place you would like to virtually visit! You will be learning more about the location and writing a letter to me from your visit! Please check out the book of student writing at the front of the room to give you an example of what we will be making.

Where I Spent My Summer

Welcome Back Students! I am excited to be starting my 4th year here as a Grade 7 Teacher and am very excited to get to know all of you better! I wanted to give you a little idea of where I was for much of my summer - IN SCHOOL! I recently decided to head back to university as a student so I can definitely say I have new appreciation for student life! Fitting in all of the work, along with family time, fun time and rest time is tricky. School is easy for some and for others it takes more work - I am one of those people that it takes some work, but it is paying off. I am learning not only about specific subject areas but also how to make better connections with my students while teaching BOTH skills and content. I am excited to head back into the classroom and return to the role as a teacher, even though I will be continuing as a student online and evenings for the foreseeable future. Here's to a fantastic year!
