Goal Setting - What is a goal you want to achieve?

From time to time, it makes sense to reflect and think about our personal goals.  What is something that you what to achieve but haven't be able to yet? In class we are currently reading the amazing books, Ghost, Patina, Sunny and Lu by Jason Reynolds, and thought about the characters' goals and how they relate to our own. Please check some of our amazing writing that encompasses just some of the literacy learning we have done this year! You can also check out this BrainPop video that also helped us focus the learning!

You can also checkout some of the learning we did previous to our writing, when we decided on which books to read, and listened to a short reading of Ghost by Jason Reynolds himself!

Food Trucks!

Have you ever had the experience of eating at a food truck? What did you have? Where was it located? For the next few weeks we will be learning more about food trucks and designing our very own!

To start, let's check out some videos about food trucks to learn a little more about them!

After watching these videos, let's do some brainstorming together! What do you now know about food trucks? What supplies are needed? Create a list in your notebook that explains the many things needed to start and run a food truck.  You can also start thinking about what type you want to create as well!

Yearly Writing Prompts

This year we will often access the writing prompts below. At times we will focus on specific prompts as a group, and other times you will have the opportunity to chose a writing prompt that interests you most. The goal is to write from a variety of perspectives and styles and move beyond only writing about what you are familiar with. Though writing about familiar topics is a good way to start, we will work this year to push ourselves with new topics and ideas!

Below are links that will take you to the Writing Prompt Calendars we've talked about in class.

The above writing prompts fit into one of five categories - Persuasive, Creative, Argumentative, Expository, Reflective

Key to the 5 prompt types

1. Persuasive

The PERSUASIVE essay attempts to sway the reader to accept the writer’s position. Key Words: Persuade, convince, sway, argue, convert.

2. Creative

The CREATIVE essay tells a story or describes a situation, person, or location. Key Words: imagine, story, tell, describe, detail.

3. Argumentative

The ARGUMENTATIVE essay is developed from a thesis in which the student takes a stance/gives an opinion. Key words: Justify, prove, take a stance, agree or disagree, argue for or against, should you or should you not, why or why not.

4. Expository

An EXPOSITORY essay explains a premise. Key words: Define, describe, demonstrate, tell how, illustrate, explain, outline the steps needed, compare or contrast, distinguish between, show cause and effect, give examples.

5. Reflective

The REFLECTIVE Essay encourages students to analyze and write about their life, personality, and/or experiences. Reflective essays are much less academic in nature. Key words: your, you.

"How to" Writing - Some Background and an Example

Hi Everyone!

Do you know how to "dab"? What about "floss"? These dance moves were pretty popular last year!! How would you teach someone to do this or something else that you are good at? The video below shows just how hard it can be to learn something and to teach something!

We have started to brainstorm some ideas for our "How-to" Writing in the general posts on TEAMS. This will be a great opportunity to teach and learn from others as we continue to learn remotely.

Teaching someone how to do something can be tricky business.  You need to be sure to include precise language, specific steps and helpful tips to support their learning.

When we did our "Les biscuits palmiers" in French, we used a lot of verbs.  We will need to do the same thing for this project in ELA.  Here are some verbs below that make sense for cooking/baking.  Think about what verbs you would need for your "How To".

Take a look at my How To below. Think of it as example.  How can you use my example to create something similar about something that you know how to do? Below there are also anchor charts that help you to understand a bit of background around this new writing project.

I Am the News
By Ella

I am the news
I see everyone looking lost, knowing not what to do next
I hear their words of fear from every direction
listen, I hear the quiet around the broadcast center it's as if I'm wearing ear plugs
I’m told everything but not trusted fully
I am the news

I am Kevin Durant
By Gavin

I am Kevin Durant
I wonder if I will get to play basketball again
I see the doctors testing me
I hear the doctors in the lab like bees in a bee’s nest
I smell lots of hand sanitizer
I worry about my health in the fearing future
I feel not too bad
I am Kevin Durant

I am Ella
I am worried for my health
I wonder how much longer it will be until a cure is found
I hear news of more and more people getting sick
I see people not taking precautions to stay healthy
want to know how much longer this craziness will last
I am Ella

I am a Retail Worker/Grocery Store Clerk
by Ella
I am worried someone I help may be carrying the virus
I wonder why others think it a good idea to fight over a little thing such as toilet paper

I see people stocking up on items
I want the stress that comes with this to stop
I am retail worker/ grocery store clerk

I read all about the deaths and the people infected on the national newspaper
I hear that only 13% of the regular students are going to school
I see everyone freaking out like the world is going to end
I know that people have died
I wonder why people have decided that toilet paper is their top priority not food
I see everyone rushing to get things like it’s the last one in the world
  I am a worried mother
