Movement - Why Do People Move?
Thursday, December 5, 2019
How would your life be different if you lived across the globe?
What does your average day look like? What do you have for breakfast? How do you get to school? What do you do after school? Do you think your live is similar to those around you? What about those across the globe, in either Australia, Asia or Africa?
Our upcoming unit in Social Studies/ELA will focus on our lives and lives of people across the globe. What do we share in common? What makes us different?
We will be creating an Infographic along with a diary entry from our own personal perspective and an imaginary perspective, if we were to live in a completely different location across the globe.
You will be responsible for choosing your location and making connections between your life here and how your live would be similar and/or different if you lived somewhere else.
We'll put our infographics and diary entries together to make a classroom book we can share with other students, teachers and parents.
We are doing this so we can gain a better understand of our personal word and the world around us, and to build our critical thinking skills.
Today we'll start by watching a video that shows a quick comparison to the lives of two different people - a boy living in Guatemala (not in Asia, Africa or Australia mind you, but it gets the point across) and a girl living in the United States.
How are these two lives different? How are they the same? In your Writer's Notebook, we will create a chart and record our thinking.

As we continue our unit on People and Places in the World, we will take a closer look at the 7 Natural Wonders of the World. Today you will have a chance to take a closer look at these natural wonders and learn more about a specific one of your choice. You might decide to learn more about Machu Picchu. This video is a good example of something you might use to do your research.
After watching the video, you can then decide if you want to learn more about Machu Picchu or if you want to learn about another natural wonder. To help you research, you can being with this wonderful website from National Geographic, 7 Natural Wonders of the World. You can record your information using the graphic organizer I will provide you. (Here is a link to it if you need another copy).
Using this research, you will create a postcard/letter from the perspective of you visiting the Natural Wonder of your choice. It will include both a picture/photo and writing. You will share your postcards with classmates.
We will work together to set guidelines of what the postcard should include. In the meantime, here is some inspiration!

of the World you “visited”. Take a look at your letter and check to see you
have included the necessary information by highlighting it on your letter and then
record it in the box. If you don’t have
the information in the letter, leave it blank.

What Does It Mean to Show Courage?
All of us have different struggles, challenges and obstacles that we overcome every day. Rather than compare ourselves to each other and challenges, we can use the strength and knowledge of others to help us in our lives. What are ways we can use the words and experiences of others to help us in overcoming our own challenges?
