Remote Learning ELA and French Menu of Options - Extending the Learning

Hello Everyone!

Mr. Nemeth and I will be meeting with you (30 minutes each) from 10:30-11:30 each school day to provide direct instruction, guide learning and answer questions. During this time we will be working the same assignments students are doing at school.

Those of you working remotely will also have a list of ELA and French activities you can chose to work on each day independently. These are activities to do once you have completed the daily work as posted in the General section of your ELA and French TEAM.

Each day, choose a few activities to work on. The goal is to spend 1-2 hours a day engaged in ELA and French activities.

Here is the list of activities you can work on independently beyond what is assigned in class. Please note that these activities can be worked on along side the posted assignments you are working on.

Please note that students will be working on similar activities at school with the guidance of both me and our supporting adults.

Reading

To begin spend at least 15 minutes per day reading for interest and/or pleasure. You may choose to read a novel, graphic novel, picture book, magazine, e-book, audiobook, or any other reading materials you have available. For ebooks, check out the following:

Writing

Spend 15 - 20 minutes writing. Chose a writing prompt from our Monthly Writing Calendars, the Extending Writing Prompts or a topic of your choice. The prompts can be found in the files section of ELA, as well as on the classroom blog here.

Listening and Viewing

Watch the free daily video on BrainPop.com and complete any related activities, such as the quizzes, mind maps or games. You can also check out the following sites:

For French, please work on the assignments as assigned in your 7E/7F French Team. If you have time, please do 15-20 minutes of Duolingo each day. The link to your class account can be found in your French TEAM.

I hope this post gives you a few ideas of things you can work on if and when you have your daily assignments complete and/or are waiting for new assignments to be released.

As always, please email or send me a chat if you need any help or support! As well, if you like, leave a comment below to tell me what you are working on!

Halloween I Am Poems

Recently, we have been learning about different types of figurative language, such as similes metaphors, alliteration and hyperboles. To continue our learning and show our understanding, we will be creating Halloween poems.

If you want to refresh your memory about some of these devices or learn about some more, check out this great video!

These poems will follow a specific format while incorporating some of the figurative language we have been learning about.

Each poem must include three of the following:

  • simile - a comparison using like or as
    • ex. I see the moon glowing like a lantern, illuminating the night sky.
  • metaphor - a comparison saying one thing IS another
    • ex. I hear the door creaking - it's sound a
  • alliteration - two words in a row with the same sound
    • ex. I watch the kids dressed as ghastly ghosts fly from home to home collecting candy.
  • hyperbole - an extreme exaggeration
    • ex. I collect enough tasty treats to feed the entire city
  • idiom - a figure of speech - something that explains a situation but using words unrelated to the actual meaning
    • ex. I walk slowly up to the house because I am a scaredy-cat.

Some lines can include more than one literary device if you like! For example, you could have a simile AND alliteration in the same phrase.

Start by copying the following bolded lines in your notebook:

Who Am I?

I am (don't give it away here just yet - make it descriptive but still mysterious)

I wonder

I hear

I see

I want

I am (this is the line that you say what it is you are describing)

I hope you enjoy writing and sharing your Halloween Poems!!

Yearly Writing Prompts

This year we will often access the writing prompts below. At times we will focus on specific prompts as a group, and other times you will have the opportunity to chose a writing prompt that interests you most. The goal is to write from a variety of perspectives and styles and move beyond only writing about what you are familiar with. Though writing about familiar topics is a good way to start, we will work this year to push ourselves with new topics and ideas!

Below are links that will take you to the Writing Prompt Calendars we've talked about in class.

I have many students samples that I will also share through the year. We will go through the many different steps and strategies that can help you build your skills as a writer!

Below are links to more complicated topics that require a specific form and style. For some of us, we will start using these very soon, and for others it will a goal to work towards. Please feel free to check out both links for each month and find the topic(s) that interest you most!

The above writing prompts fit into one of five categories - Persuasive, Creative, Argumentative, Expository, Reflective

Key to the 5 prompt types

1. Persuasive

The PERSUASIVE essay attempts to sway the reader to accept the writer’s position. Key Words: Persuade, convince, sway, argue, convert.

2. Creative

The CREATIVE essay tells a story or describes a situation, person, or location. Key Words: imagine, story, tell, describe, detail.

3. Argumentative

The ARGUMENTATIVE essay is developed from a thesis in which the student takes a stance/gives an opinion. Key words: Justify, prove, take a stance, agree or disagree, argue for or against, should you or should you not, why or why not.

4. Expository

An EXPOSITORY essay explains a premise. Key words: Define, describe, demonstrate, tell how, illustrate, explain, outline the steps needed, compare or contrast, distinguish between, show cause and effect, give examples.

5. Reflective

The REFLECTIVE Essay encourages students to analyze and write about their life, personality, and/or experiences. Reflective essays are much less academic in nature. Key words: your, you.

Who do you look up to?

Who do you look up to? Who is someone you respect and admire? Are they someone who has overcome obstacles, achieved greatness or helped others reach their goals?

There are many reasons we may look up to another person and we can learn a lot about why we feel so passionate about other people.  We often celebrate celebrities (notice the word connection!), some for good reason, others, sometimes simply for being famous!  Who do you look up to? Let's start by making a list.  If I asked you, who do you look up to and why, who would you include? Secondly, do you think there maybe be other people in the world you may not know as much about but perhaps might find their story interesting or inspiring?

Today we will read a book and watch a short video about a famous scientist named Jane Goodall.  She is someone who was driven to follow her passion for helping animals, specially chimpanzees in the wild - learning about their behaviour and relating it to humans. Though she may have accomplished things you may not also feel passionate about, you can take her story and think what you love doing and what you would like to do in your future.

This lesson is kicking off our unit about Change Makers.  We will be learning about the many people in the world who have made it a better place, writing about them, presenting about them, and in turn, thinking about the people we want to become in the future.

How does who we admire reflect our own personality? How can these people inspire us even if we don't actually "know" them?

Here is an excellent clips from National Geographic discussing Jane Goodall's research.

Hello Everyone!

Hello Students and Families!

I continue to be impressed with your problem solving skills, your writing, your thinking and your learning through our remote learning! So many of you have risen to the challenge of engaging in the activities even though they have been quite different from our normal routine. I have enjoyed chatting with you and hearing about things are going through Teams. As always, if you need help please reach out by messaging your teachers in Teams or by sending an email.

We will all continue to try our best to make the most of this situation!

Take care of yourself and enjoy yourself this weekend!

♥. Mrs. Steinhoff

****I thought I would leave this little video below. Though it talks about life life lessons from Disney/Pixar I invite us to think about the life lessons we are learning while home.

"How to" Writing - Some Background and an Example

Hi Everyone!

Do you know how to "dab"? What about "floss"? These dance moves were pretty popular last year!! How would you teach someone to do this or something else that you are good at? The video below shows just how hard it can be to learn something and to teach something!

We have started to brainstorm some ideas for our "How-to" Writing in the general posts on TEAMS. This will be a great opportunity to teach and learn from others as we continue to learn remotely.

Teaching someone how to do something can be tricky business.  You need to be sure to include precise language, specific steps and helpful tips to support their learning.

When we did our "Les biscuits palmiers" in French, we used a lot of verbs.  We will need to do the same thing for this project in ELA.  Here are some verbs below that make sense for cooking/baking.  Think about what verbs you would need for your "How To".

Take a look at my How To below. Think of it as example.  How can you use my example to create something similar about something that you know how to do? Below there are also anchor charts that help you to understand a bit of background around this new writing project.

Hello and Welcome Back :)

Hello Students, Families and Guardians of 7ABC,
We hope that you have had some time to enjoy your Spring Break through these changing times. As a teaching team, we have taken some time to begin planning how we will proceed as we continue to learn remotely. Over the next week, students are encouraged to begin, continue working on and/or finish the assignments that have been posted on Microsoft Teams. As your child's core subject teachers, we have posted work through this platform that students can access through the school's website.
For this coming week, we will continue to touch base with students as they work though the assignments currently posted along with some new items.
If you do not have access to technology, please let your child's homeroom teacher know so we can work to make other arrangements. We understand that with the potential of having parents working from home and families with multiple children (along with the jobs and tasks of day to day life) that work may come in a different times.
Our goal this week is to connect with every student and get them on track for the assignments that have already been assigned as well as setting our sights on new learning.
We encourage your child to contact us directly through Teams by using the chat function if they have any questions or need support.

We will navigate this new way of learning the best way possible together! Thank you so much for your continued support!

Sincerely,
Laura Steinhoff, Liz Kurtz and Ken Nemeth

Happy Spring Break - As happy as it can be . . .

Hello Everyone,

Usually the Friday before Spring Break starts is a pretty fun and exciting time. We often have Culturama, maybe a dance or a talent show, and bunch of other fun things planned to fill our week. This week was obviously very different as we worked to get everyone used to learning online and remotely as best as possible. Thank you so much to all of the students and parents who have reached out, worked on assignments, chatted, and connected. Next week is technically Spring Break but as I'm sure is the case for all of us, our days are going to look quite different.

Over the break, be sure to take a break from work but if you feel like working on some school work helps you pass the time, go for it. There is no pressure to get anything done or handed in next week.

I will check into Teams periodically to help those who may need it as I will most likely need a distraction too.

Take care of yourselves and your family, get lots of time outside, practice social distancing and wash those hands!

♥, Mrs. Steinhoff

How to Listen to Your Work in Word

Hello Everyone!

As you are working on online documents, you many want to try this strategy to make sure your work sounds the way you want it to! It is especially helpful when we are learning remotely.

Take a look at the video and please leave a comment below if you think this is something you might find useful in your classroom!

Click here for the video if the one below does not work :)

Some Words of Wisdom from Chris Hadfield

Hello Everyone,

This morning while watching CBC I saw an interview with Chris Hadfield - Canadian astronaut, scientist, musician and all around "good guy" ! Though I am still looking for that specific video, it did reference a message he posted on Youtube that I want to share with you below.

Please watch the video and leave a comment as to something you may decide to do today that you usually wouldn't have time for.  What is something you could learn about, try, begin or finish?

This will be cross posted in Teams but please feel free to comment here, in Teams or in both!

I am still thinking about what I am going to try but I'm planning on making a school related goal and and a life/home related goal and I encourage you to do the same!

Mrs. Steinhoff

Hello Everyone :)

Hi Everyone!

How are you doing? Let's all take a breath together. Parents and students. This is a BIG change from our regular days. As a teacher, parent and student (yes, I am also a university student right now) I can empathize with the challenges you are facing in terms of staying engaged in academic learning, never mind the day to day worries of finances, child care, bills etc.

Please know that I get it! This post is to say hello and to ask how you are doing. It is also to ask if you have accessed the online learning and Microsoft Teams. The 7ABC teachers have posted some links and assignments you can work on. Do what you can and do not be bogged down by the logistics of it all. There is a chat function in TEAMS and all of your teachers are her to talk with you to help you figure things out.

If you are finding some time to spend reading, writing, and learning at home, that is what matters. I understand many of you may be taking care of siblings or other children, performing more chores and learning "life skills". Those things are ALL so important! Hopefully you have been able to carve some time for yourself to spend on some academics this week.

As a teaching team, we have created a quick check in to see if you are accessing the online learning.

7A - you can access it here
7B - you can access it here
7C - you can access it here

Please reach out through email or chat on TEAMS if there is any way we can help :)

Mrs. Steinhoff and your 7ABC Teachers :)
